Para muchas personas, el problema con los libros electrónicos es que vienen con esa clase de restricciones. Los e-books adquiridos en Amazon, por ejemplo, se pueden leer sólo en un dispositivo Kindle o en su software para iPhone.

Por eso, algunos editores y fabricantes de electrónica están intentando dar a los compradores de libros electrónicos más flexibilidad mediante el uso de tecnologías estándar.

Sony Electronics, que vende dispositivos para e-books bajo la marca Reader, planea anunciar esta semana que, hacia fines de año, venderá libros digitales sólo en formato ePub, el estándar abierto del que ya hemos estado hablando.

Tras el cambio, los libros adquiridos en el sitio de Sony serán legibles no sólo en su propio dispositivo sino además en la creciente galaxia de otros lectores que soportan ePub, incluido el Plastic Logic eReader que, en alianza con Barnes & Noble, se espera salga a la venta a comienzos de 2010.

Hace poco Amazon demostró, involuntariamente, una consecuencia potencial de las restricciones de los e-books, cuando descubrió que había vendido copias no autorizadas de obras de Orwell y, entonces, debió quitarlas de los dispositivos Kindle de usuarios que las habían comprado.

El suceso fue utilizado por algunos para clamar contra las limitaciones de la lectura digital.

No es que Sony vaya a abandonar las medidas anticopia: el temor a una piratería en aumento es plausible. Sin embargo, parece querer impulsar la industria del e-book hacia estándares comunes, tal vez con ánimo de evitar una repetición del dominio de Apple sobre el negocio de la música (que le permitió dictar condiciones a los principales sellos en cuestiones como el precio de las canciones).

De hecho, Sony dice que resignará su DRM propietario en favor del más ampliamente admitido Adobe Content Server 4. Como en el caso del Kindle, la protección anticopia del Content Server es propietaria y, naturalmente, la posee Adobe.

Pero, a diferencia de Amazon, el estándar de Adobe es licenciable abiertamente. Mientras ello aun deja a esta compañía en una favorable posición –pues le permite captar ganancias a ambos extremos de la cadena-, es, para editores y usuarios, un ambiente más amigable que el “jardín amurallado” de Amazon.

Un analista ha dicho que, si tal como se espera Apple introduce pronto una Tablet PC que podría funcionar como dispositivo de lectura, y se decide por un estándar abierto como ePub, entonces Amazon tendrá que revisar su enfoque cerrado.

La traducción de bücherwurm al castellano puede significar tanto “ratón (o gusano) de biblioteca” como, de modo más general, “devorador de libros”. El detalle que incluimos de la pintura de Spitzweg es elocuente:

La traslación de esa misma expresión al inglés es bookworm. Y Bookworm también es, por cierto, un nombre que ha empezado a lucir con brillo propio en la blogosfera, como denominación de la plataforma para lectura online de libros en formato ePub.

Recordemos aquí que el estándar ePub reúne, a través del International Digital Publishing Forum, a varios actores importantes de las industrias que vinculan el libro y la tecnología (Harper Collins, Random House, Santillana en Red, Adobe, Sony, iRex, etcétera).

Originariamente, Bookworm fue gestado en julio de 2008 por la ingeniera en software Liza Daly para Threepress Consulting, compañía que preside, como un sitio web en donde los usuarios pudiesen almacenar libros en formato ePub, leerlos online, y descargarlos en dispositivos tales como smartphones.

El sitio se ejecuta en un framework Django, por lo tanto está escrito en lenguaje Python, y la mayoría de su código fuente es abierto y disponible a través de Google. En febrero de 2009, el proyecto Bookworm pasó a formar parte de O’Reilly Labs, sitio de la conocida casa editora de libros de computación.

Ante la pregunta sobre si el ePub triunfará, Liza Daly ha respondido: “Espero que sí, y no porque se trate de de mi formato-mascota, sino porque ello sería una victoria para los usuarios”.

Tal vez Der Bücherwurm hubiera estado de acuerdo.

Pero, ¿de qué se trata? Traducimos:

Un libro tradicional es lanzado en ediciones. Cuando un trabajo es revisado o actualizado, se publica una nueva edición. Estas ediciones revisadas o actualizadas por lo general ofrecen pequeños cambios graduales: un nuevo prólogo o introducción, un nuevo capítulo, pequeñas modificaciones de contenido.

Un unbook es más como software:

1. Nunca está terminado, sino más bien continuamente actualizado, en base al feedback de los usuarios y la evolución de sus necesidades.

2. Un unbook es lanzado en versiones. Como en el software de código abierto, la versión 1.0 de un unbook es un hito importante: indica que es estable y suficientemente fiable para su uso público. La importancia de una nueva versión es indicada por el tamaño de la brecha. Por ejemplo, la brecha entre 1.1 y 1.1.3 es de menor importancia, mientras que la diferencia entre 1.1 y 2.0 ya es considerable.

3. Un unbook es apoyado por una comunidad de usuarios que comparten sus experiencias y mejores prácticas, y se ayudan a resolver problemas en sus áreas profesionales. Una “comunidad unbook” es una parte muy real del equipo de desarrollo de un unbook.

Valga como aproximación inicial al encuentro de ambos mundos esta noticia, en la cual se menciona al programa de software libre para autoedición de libros Scribus:

Open Source Publishing, un estudio de diseño belga que lleva algunos años haciendo un comprometido activismo por el software libre y las tipografías libres desde su blog, acaba de ganar el premio Plantin-Moretus a la excelencia en producción y diseño de libros en la categoría no-ficción. El libro premiado se llama Cross-Over y reune ensayos acerca del cruce entre arte, cultura y tecnología, en el contexto de los nuevos medios de comunicación y la sociedad de la información. Fue diseñado sólo utilizando software libre y diagramado en Scribus, contiene visualizaciones gráficas de datos realizadas en Inkscape y mucho scripting en Python. Las tipografías usadas fueron Liberation Mono, Liberation Sans y Liberation Serif.

CROSS-over: Kunst, Media en Design in Vlaanderen ha sido editado por Liesbeth Huybrechts y publicado por BAM (Instituut voor beeldende, audiovisuele en mediakunst) / Lannoo.

El premio lleva el nombre de la imprenta holandesa fundada en el S. XVI por el célebre impresor Christoffel Plantijn y continuada por Jan Moretus. Convertida en museo desde el S. XIX, incluye las dos prensas más antiguas del mundo.

La noticia pone de manifiesto en una primera lectura -que no es la única- la posibilidad de producir libros de calidad utilizando únicamente herramientas de software libre, sin tener que pagar costosas licencias ni quedar atado a un único proveedor de software.

Por otro lado, el hecho de que un libro creado con herramientas de software libre haya obtenido un premio que, a su vez, homenajea a dos impresores de los albores de la Edad moderna, es una demostración cristalina de que la historia del libro es historia viva, y está muy lejos de cesar en su evolución.
