La mente humana [...] opera por medio de la asociación. Cuando un elemento se encuentra a su alcance, salta instantáneamente al siguiente que viene sugerido por la asociación de pensamientos, según una intrincada red de senderos de información que portan las células del cerebro. [...] los senderos de información que no se transitan habitualmente tienden a disolverse: la memoria, en definitiva, es transitoria. Y, sin embargo, la velocidad de la acción, lo intrincado de los senderos y el nivel de detalle de las imágenes mentales nos maravillan mucho más reverencialmente que cualquier otra cosa de la naturaleza.
El ser humano no puede albergar la esperanza de replicar este proceso mental de manera artificial, pero sí debe ser capaz de aprender de él e, incluso, mejorarlo en algunos detalles menores, puesto que los archivos confeccionados por el ser humano tienen un carácter relativamente permanente. No obstante, la primera idea que se puede extraer de esta analogía está relacionada con la selección, pues la selección por asociación, y no por indexación, puede ser mecanizada.
Tomemos en consideración un aparato futuro de uso individual que es una especie de archivo privado mecanizado y biblioteca. Como necesita un nombre, y por establecer uno al azar, podríamos denominarlo “memex” [memory extender o “extensor de la memoria”]. Un memex es un aparato en el que una persona almacena todos sus libros, archivos y comunicaciones, y que está mecanizado de modo que puede consultarse con una gran velocidad y flexibilidad. En realidad, constituye un suplemento ampliado e íntimo de su memoria.
Se puede, por supuesto, consultar este archivo mediante el esquema habitual de indizado. Así, si el usuario desea consultar un libro en concreto, compone su código con el teclado y la cubierta del libro aparece inmediatamente ante su vista, proyectada en uno de sus visores. [...] Además de lo que acabamos de ver, el memex dispone de palancas suplementarias. Cuando el usuario acciona una de ellas hacia la derecha, puede recorrer con la vista el libro que está utilizando, pues ante él aparece todo el contenido del libro, página a página y con la velocidad suficiente para que pueda identificarlas fácilmente. Un botón especial lo transfiere hasta la primera página del índice. Cualquier libro de su biblioteca puede ser, por consiguiente, llamado y consultado con una facilidad muchísimo mayor que si se hubiese de tomar de una estantería.
Todo lo que acabo de describir [...] representa un paso inmediato hacia la indización o archivado de tipo asociativo, cuya idea básica consiste en posibilitar que cada uno de los elementos pueda seleccionar o llamar, según nuestra voluntad, a otro elemento de una manera inmediata y automática. Esta constituye la característica esencial del memex; el proceso de enlazar dos elementos distintos entre sí es lo que le otorga su verdadera importancia.
Así, cuando numerosos elementos han sido enlazados entre sí para conformar un sendero de información, pueden consultarse unos tras otros, rápida o lentamente según lo desee, utilizando unas palancas similares a las que se usan para pasar las páginas de un libro. [...] Y todavía es algo más que eso, pues cada uno de los elementos puede pertenecer, a su vez, a más de un sendero de información.
En el futuro aparecerán formas totalmente nuevas de enciclopedias, que contendrán en su seno numerosos senderos de información preestablecidos, y que podrán ser introducidas en el memex para ser ampliadas por el usuario. [...] Aparecerá una nueva profesión, la de los trazadores de senderos, es decir, aquellas personas que encuentran placer en la tarea de establecer senderos de información útiles que transcurran a través de la inmensa masa del archivo común de la Humanidad.

Los párrafos anteriores no fueron escritos hace unos meses, ni unos años, ni tampoco pertenecen a la ficción especulativa. Corresponden a un artículo publicado en julio de 1945 en la revista bostoniana The Atlantic Monthly por el ingeniero estadounidense Vannevar Bush, y su texto ha llegado a ser uno de los más citados, hasta el presente, en cualquier libro que trate sobre Internet, la web y los motores de búsqueda. De hecho, As We May Think, como se tituló, inspiró más tarde el desarrollo de la tecnología del hipertexto.

Der Bücherwurm es una pintura al óleo de 1850 del poeta y pintor alemán Carl Spitzweg. La traducción de bücherwurm al castellano puede significar tanto “ratón (o gusano) de biblioteca” como, de modo más general, “devorador de libros”. El detalle que incluimos de la pintura de Spitzweg es elocuente:
La traslación de esa misma expresión al inglés es bookworm. Y Bookworm también es, por cierto, un nombre que ha empezado a lucir con brillo propio en la blogosfera, como denominación de la plataforma para lectura online de libros en formato ePub.
Recordemos aquí que el estándar ePub reúne, a través del International Digital Publishing Forum, a varios actores importantes de las industrias que vinculan el libro y la tecnología (Harper Collins, Random House, Santillana en Red, Adobe, Sony, iRex, etcétera).
Originariamente, Bookworm fue gestado en julio de 2008 por la ingeniera en software Liza Daly para Threepress Consulting, compañía que preside, como un sitio web en donde los usuarios pudiesen almacenar libros en formato ePub, leerlos online, y descargarlos en dispositivos tales como smartphones.
El sitio se ejecuta en un framework Django, por lo tanto está escrito en lenguaje Python, y la mayoría de su código fuente es abierto y disponible a través de Google. En febrero de 2009, el proyecto Bookworm pasó a formar parte de O’Reilly Labs, sitio de la conocida casa editora de libros de computación.
Ante la pregunta sobre si el ePub triunfará, Liza Daly ha respondido: “Espero que sí, y no porque se trate de de mi formato-mascota, sino porque ello sería una victoria para los usuarios”.
Tal vez Der Bücherwurm hubiera estado de acuerdo.

Sobre la posibilidad de encontrar obras literarias en Internet, completas o resumidas, y además enterarse de su localización física por medio de la red, han opinado profesores, editores, escritores y bibliotecarios.
Cierta inquietud es que los usuarios busquen información parcial y no lean un libro detenidamente. Una bibliotecaria de la Universidad de Yale ha dicho: “[...] estoy preocupada pedagógicamente y en términos del avance del conocimiento, pues la gente será alentada a usar libros de una manera muy fragmentaria”.
Para otros, los lectores seguirán valorando los textos largos y, en todo caso, la búsqueda de libros en la Web solo los ayudará a encontrarlos. Otro bibliotecario, esta vez de la Universidad de Michigan, opina: “No existe una manera abreviada de apreciar a Jane Austen, y espero estar en lo cierto”.
Un artículo en The New York Times recuerda que en el film Crepúsculo, versión cinematográfica de la novela de Stephenie Meyer, uno de los personajes principales -una adolescente- utiliza Google para hallar información sobre un pueblo aborigen estadounidense. Y, cuando la búsqueda la remite a un libro determinado, ella va a un librería… y lo compra.

Cualquier amante de la lectura sabrá que, entre los grandes cultores de la ficción especulativa o, más comúnmente, ciencia ficción, Ray Bradbury ocupa un sitio indiscutible entre sus novelistas y cuentistas, por lo menos desde aquella pequeña joya -que Borges prologó en la edición de Minotauro de 1955- titulada Crónicas marcianas.
Dice Borges allí, evocando a su vez una obra de Kepler del siglo XVII: “[...] Por su carácter de anticipación de un porvenir posible o probable, el Somnium Astronomicum prefigura, si no me equivoco, el nuevo género narrativo que los americanos del Norte denominan science-fiction o scientifiction y del que son admirable ejemplo estas Crónicas. [...]”
Pero, ¿qué opina Bradbury hoy, año 2009, acerca de las maravillas tecnológicas de un porvenir que ya nos ha dado alcance? Aquí va la traducción de un fragmento de lo que expresó hace pocas semanas en un reportaje concedido a The New York Times:
“Internet es una gran distracción. Yahoo me llamó hace ocho semanas. Querían poner un libro mío ahí… ¿Sabés lo que les dije? Al diablo con ustedes. Al diablo con ustedes y con Internet. Es distracción. No tiene sentido. No es real. Está en el aire en alguna parte…”
