Una muy citada línea del cuento El sur, de Jorge Luis Borges, dice: A la realidad le gustan las simetrías y los leves anacronismos.
Como corolario de una semana signada, en materia de libros electrónicos, por el caso Amazon-Orwell, hallamos una breve pero aguda referencia de Carlos Guyot en adn Cultura. Allí, el autor recuerda que el protagonista de la novela 1984 es un funcionario del gobierno cuya labor es destruir libros.
Por pura y azarosa simetría libresca (cualquier buen lector lo sabe: los libros dialogan entre sí), en una entrada anterior de este blog se mencionó a Fahrenheit 451, de Ray Bradbury. El título se debe a la temperatura a la que arde el papel, pues en esa novela utópica los bomberos -funcionarios públicos- no tienen como misión extinguir incendios sino… quemar libros. Hacia el final, una suerte de secta lectora decide combatir esa destrucción y conjurarse para memorizar, cada uno de sus miembros, algún libro capital de la cultura humana.
Las mejores ficciones utópicas encarnan el anacronismo elevado a arte. ¿Por qué no imaginar qué libro querría memorizar cada uno de nosotros, de la primera a la última línea, para preservarlo mientras dure nuestra vida?

Cualquier amante de la lectura sabrá que, entre los grandes cultores de la ficción especulativa o, más comúnmente, ciencia ficción, Ray Bradbury ocupa un sitio indiscutible entre sus novelistas y cuentistas, por lo menos desde aquella pequeña joya -que Borges prologó en la edición de Minotauro de 1955- titulada Crónicas marcianas.
Dice Borges allí, evocando a su vez una obra de Kepler del siglo XVII: “[...] Por su carácter de anticipación de un porvenir posible o probable, el Somnium Astronomicum prefigura, si no me equivoco, el nuevo género narrativo que los americanos del Norte denominan science-fiction o scientifiction y del que son admirable ejemplo estas Crónicas. [...]”
Pero, ¿qué opina Bradbury hoy, año 2009, acerca de las maravillas tecnológicas de un porvenir que ya nos ha dado alcance? Aquí va la traducción de un fragmento de lo que expresó hace pocas semanas en un reportaje concedido a The New York Times:
“Internet es una gran distracción. Yahoo me llamó hace ocho semanas. Querían poner un libro mío ahí… ¿Sabés lo que les dije? Al diablo con ustedes. Al diablo con ustedes y con Internet. Es distracción. No tiene sentido. No es real. Está en el aire en alguna parte…”
