Hace poco descubrimos dos catálogos online que vale la pena comentar.

El primero de ellos, OpenLibrary, está pensado como un proyecto comunitario, algo así como una Wikipedia de información sobre libros, donde los usuarios pueden mejorar las fichas de los libros y subir portadas y resúmenes. “Una página para cada libro” es el ambicioso objetivo. Actualmente cuentan con 23,5 millones de registros, de los cuales 1 millón están con el texto completo digitalizado. La carga inicial de la base se realizó importando información de distintas bibliotecas de USA, de Google y de Amazon. El proyecto es impulsado por Internet Archive, una organización sin fines de lucro, y está actualmente en fase beta.

El segundo es WorldCat. Esta plataforma está impulsada por la OCLC, una organización que desde hace años coordina esfuerzos en materia de información digital de distintas bibliotecas del mundo. Su base contiene más de 140 millones de registros bibliográficos. Además de la información bibliográfica, permite encontrar en qué bibliotecas está disponible el libro buscado.

Estos se suman a otros que conocemos y utilizamos hace tiempo:

  • LibrosAr: en este sitio la Cámara Argentina del Libro ofrece acceso a todos los libros argentinos registrados. La CAL es responsable de la Agencia ISBN de Argentina, por lo cual todos los libros deben estar registrados allí previamente a su edición.
  • DILVE: esta plataforma permite el acceso a más de 208.000 registros de libros españoles. Está impulsada por la Federación de Gremios de Editores de España y contiene información de gran parte de los libros actualmente en distribución.
  • RILVI: es una herramienta desarrollada conjuntamente por el CERLALC y las agencias ISBN y proporciona información bibliográfica de la oferta editorial latinoamericana.

Todas estas fuentes pueden accederse a través de APIs desde otras aplicaciones, lo cual permite incorporar la información directamente a los sistemas de gestión, sin necesidad de ingresar manualmente la ficha. Los usuarios de Fierro hace años que cuentan con la importación desde LibrosAr y RILVI y desde hace poco de DILVE. Probablemente otros sistemas también lo hagan. Por eso, la próxima vez que se encuentre tipeando la ficha de un libro en su sistema, tenga en cuenta que otros ya hicieron lo mismo y esa información está disponible para ahorrarse este trabajo.
