De vez en cuando no gusta examinar la opinión que los campeones de la cultura tienen acerca de la tecnología, especialmente en su relación con el libro. Ya hemos relatado aquí lo que Ray Bradbury opina de Internet.
Veamos ahora estas frases:

Quien las ha pronunciado no es, sin embargo, ningún apocalíptico, según esta casi opuesta noticia. Se trata nada menos que de Umberto Eco, inventor de esa abismal máquina borgeana que es la biblioteca del El nombre de la rosa, y creador, claro está, del personaje central de la novela, fray William de Baskerville, franciscano y discípulo de Francis Bacon, este último gran propulsor del método científico en tiempos pre-científicos.

En el mismo artículo citado en nuestra entrada precedente, su autor se interrogaba:

Han transcurrido 64 años desde que Vannevar Bush imaginó esas arduas combinaciones pero, a juzgar por esta muy reciente noticia, todavía parece no haber demasiada suerte al respecto.
Puestos a hablar de tiempo transcurrido, volvamos al comienzo de todo. Hace unos dos mil setecientos años, un rapsoda procedente del Asia Menor jónica, de quien todavía se duda si fue un individuo o un grupo de personas bajo un nombre común, recorría los caminos mientras recitaba, en ferias y fiestas populares, sus propias obras a quien quisiera escucharlo. Los versos de esos recitados, reunidos, constituyen dos de las obras mayores de la épica universal: La Ilíada y La Odisea.
Hoy, las imaginaciones técnicas de un ingeniero visionario respecto de la voz humana no se perciben completamente factibles. Sin embargo, conmueve comprobar que sí, en cambio, es posible escuchar los textos homéricos -que fueron palabra hablada antes que escrita- en los actuales audiobooks y, nada menos, en las voces de actores espléndidos como Ian Mc Kellen y Derek Jacobi.

En adn Cultura del pasado sábado 8, Carlos Guyot nos pone en conocimiento de la existencia de los unbooks (por unfinished book, o libro-inconcluso), y de Jay Cross y Dave Gray, creadores del concepto.
Pero, ¿de qué se trata? Traducimos:
Un libro tradicional es lanzado en ediciones. Cuando un trabajo es revisado o actualizado, se publica una nueva edición. Estas ediciones revisadas o actualizadas por lo general ofrecen pequeños cambios graduales: un nuevo prólogo o introducción, un nuevo capítulo, pequeñas modificaciones de contenido.
Un unbook es más como software:
1. Nunca está terminado, sino más bien continuamente actualizado, en base al feedback de los usuarios y la evolución de sus necesidades.
2. Un unbook es lanzado en versiones. Como en el software de código abierto, la versión 1.0 de un unbook es un hito importante: indica que es estable y suficientemente fiable para su uso público. La importancia de una nueva versión es indicada por el tamaño de la brecha. Por ejemplo, la brecha entre 1.1 y 1.1.3 es de menor importancia, mientras que la diferencia entre 1.1 y 2.0 ya es considerable.
3. Un unbook es apoyado por una comunidad de usuarios que comparten sus experiencias y mejores prácticas, y se ayudan a resolver problemas en sus áreas profesionales. Una “comunidad unbook” es una parte muy real del equipo de desarrollo de un unbook.

Quizás la ambigüedad acerca de qué es un libro electrónico persistirá un cierto tiempo, habida cuenta de la juventud del concepto. La definición todavía es amplia: un libro electrónico puede ser, para algunas opiniones, cualquier formato digital destinado a albergar un libro.
Sin embargo, cada vez parece quedar más claro que una cosa es la versión digital de un libro y otra el dispositivo que se utilice para tener acceso a ella. Y los dispositivos, precisamente, han empezado a convertirse en los reyes del nuevo concepto: son bellos, manuables, de diseño austero y, asunto no menor a la hora de apreciar su seducción, capaces de gran generosidad de almacenamiento.
En un post anterior recordábamos la novela de Bradbury en donde un grupo de fieles almacenan, cada uno en su respectiva memoria neuronal, un gran libro de la humanidad. Imáginese usted, lector, disponer de todo Cervantes en su e-book, de todo Kafka, de todo Borges o de todo de lo que más le guste, y ello en el interior de su mochila, maletín o bolsillo de la bici.
Ahora bien: ¿cómo funcionan?
Hace alrededor de 2400 años ya se conocía, al menos de manera documentalmente verificable, el uso de la tinta. Un glosario de hermosas palabras latinas recorre su historia temprana: atraméntum (la tinta negra), sácrum encáustum (la tinta púrpura usada sólo por reyes y emperadores), minium o sinopis (la tinta colorada para las mayúsculas y los títulos de los documentos).
Largo camino hemos recorrido, y hoy nos hallamos en un punto en donde acaso convenga asumirnos como testigos de una revolución histórica. ¿Seguirán siendo los libros lo mismo que hemos conocido y amado? ¿Seguirán siendo lo mismo el papel, la tinta?
Los nuevos dispositivos de lectura (iLiad, Reader, Kindle, por nombrar algunos) funcionan mediante la tinta electrónica, muy distante en el tiempo de aquéllas preparadas a base de goma y hollín que dieron comienzo a todo. Pero esta parte de la historia, flamante y aún casi desconocida, contiene otras formas de belleza: las de la ciencia química y su heredera dominante, la electrónica.
La tecnología pionera tuvo origen, como muchas otras cosas, en el laboratorio PARC de Xerox. Allí se creó Gyricon, un tipo de display hecho de una fina y transparente lámina plástica, dentro de la cual se diseminan millones de microesferas. Éstas, constituidas por hemisferios cargados eléctricamente, se comportan como un dipolo y giran en diminutas cavidades llenas de fluido. Al poseer dichos hemisferios colores contrastados (blanco y negro, o rojo y blanco), cuando se aplica voltaje a la superficie de la lámina las microesferas giran y presentan uno u otro lado coloreado al observador.
E-Ink, competidora de la tecnología de Xerox, es la más utilizada actualmente, según se dice a causa de su mayor capacidad de resolución. En esencia el método es similar: al contener cada microesfera (del diámetro de un cabello humano) partículas con carga, la tensión negativa o positiva aplicada por dos transmisores hace que, bien las partículas cargadas positivamente (blancas), bien las cargadas negativamente (negras), o ambas, suban a la superficie del polímero que las contiene y se vuelvan visibles. Sobre la posibilidad de encontrar obras literarias en Internet, completas o resumidas, y además enterarse de su localización física por medio de la red, han opinado profesores, editores, escritores y bibliotecarios.
Cierta inquietud es que los usuarios busquen información parcial y no lean un libro detenidamente. Una bibliotecaria de la Universidad de Yale ha dicho: “[...] estoy preocupada pedagógicamente y en términos del avance del conocimiento, pues la gente será alentada a usar libros de una manera muy fragmentaria”.
Para otros, los lectores seguirán valorando los textos largos y, en todo caso, la búsqueda de libros en la Web solo los ayudará a encontrarlos. Otro bibliotecario, esta vez de la Universidad de Michigan, opina: “No existe una manera abreviada de apreciar a Jane Austen, y espero estar en lo cierto”.
Un artículo en The New York Times recuerda que en el film Crepúsculo, versión cinematográfica de la novela de Stephenie Meyer, uno de los personajes principales -una adolescente- utiliza Google para hallar información sobre un pueblo aborigen estadounidense. Y, cuando la búsqueda la remite a un libro determinado, ella va a un librería… y lo compra.

Una muy citada línea del cuento El sur, de Jorge Luis Borges, dice: A la realidad le gustan las simetrías y los leves anacronismos.
Como corolario de una semana signada, en materia de libros electrónicos, por el caso Amazon-Orwell, hallamos una breve pero aguda referencia de Carlos Guyot en adn Cultura. Allí, el autor recuerda que el protagonista de la novela 1984 es un funcionario del gobierno cuya labor es destruir libros.
Por pura y azarosa simetría libresca (cualquier buen lector lo sabe: los libros dialogan entre sí), en una entrada anterior de este blog se mencionó a Fahrenheit 451, de Ray Bradbury. El título se debe a la temperatura a la que arde el papel, pues en esa novela utópica los bomberos -funcionarios públicos- no tienen como misión extinguir incendios sino… quemar libros. Hacia el final, una suerte de secta lectora decide combatir esa destrucción y conjurarse para memorizar, cada uno de sus miembros, algún libro capital de la cultura humana.
Las mejores ficciones utópicas encarnan el anacronismo elevado a arte. ¿Por qué no imaginar qué libro querría memorizar cada uno de nosotros, de la primera a la última línea, para preservarlo mientras dure nuestra vida?

En un post reciente intentamos señalar la tal vez sólo aparente incoherencia de que una mente imaginativa, creadora de futuros, no se entienda con las tecnologías de un presente que hizo realidad muchas de esas imaginaciones. Sólo como muestra de una contradicción semejante, transcribimos un fragmento del diálogo entre el periodista científico Leonardo Moledo y el doctor en Química e investigador del Conicet Roberto Etchenique:
Moledo: Todas estas investigaciones resultan inquietantes. Por ejemplo, yo pienso que sería maravilloso aprender un idioma mediante un chip. Pero hay otras cosas, como por ejemplo los libros. El libro parece una invención que no puede modificarse mucho, como el vaso para tomar agua. Se modifica el material, un poco la forma, pero la esencia es la misma.
Etchenique: Bueno, ahora está cambiando un poco. Los primeros libros, apenas creada la imprenta, trataban de emular el pergamino. Con el tiempo se dieron cuenta de que eso no servía para nada, que lo importante son las letras que tienen adentro. Actualmente está cambiando el soporte del libro: no le queda mucho tiempo al papel. El problema de Botnia no se genera porque la humanidad es buena y Finlandia es mala. Se genera porque la gente quiere papel y las fábricas más contaminantes de papel son las de papel bueno, lo cual significa llenar el ambiente de compuestos azufrados y olorosos.
M.:¿Cómo está cambiando el libro?
E.: Hoy por hoy se está yendo hacia un libro bochornoso y berreta y que funciona muy mal (tal vez tan mal como el libro de Gutenberg) que es el ebook, el libro que es como una pantallita y uno va pasando las páginas. Pero tiene poca luz, mala resolución, el libro es grandote, caro y lo roban en el subte. No es una excelente alternativa. Ahora bien: eso probablemente cambie, se abarate, mejore. De todos modos, va a seguir siendo más o menos lo mismo. Palabras.
M.: Palabras, palabras, palabras.
E.: Lo que cambia es el soporte material. La esencia del libro no es el papel, eso cambió: fue piedra, fue arcilla, fue papiro, fue pergamino. La próxima será silicio (no creo que dure mucho) y después, por qué no, nada.
M.: Como en Fahrenheit 451, donde cada uno se aprendía un libro de memoria.
E.: Y además, se lo puede compartir. ¿Por qué no recordar los libros? No todo el tiempo, pero sí cuando queremos. Tenerlos incorporados dentro nuestro y acceder a ellos. Alguno puede pensar que esto nos vuelve un poco androides, poco humanos. [...] Pienso que, tal vez, es una cosa innecesaria. El libro, salvo por el problema de los bosques, me parece que alcanzó una estabilidad que no sé si hace falta modificar. La pregunta es si no estamos yendo un poco lejos. Aunque para acceder a esa tecnología casi de ciencia ficción hacen falta siglos.

Cualquier amante de la lectura sabrá que, entre los grandes cultores de la ficción especulativa o, más comúnmente, ciencia ficción, Ray Bradbury ocupa un sitio indiscutible entre sus novelistas y cuentistas, por lo menos desde aquella pequeña joya -que Borges prologó en la edición de Minotauro de 1955- titulada Crónicas marcianas.
Dice Borges allí, evocando a su vez una obra de Kepler del siglo XVII: “[...] Por su carácter de anticipación de un porvenir posible o probable, el Somnium Astronomicum prefigura, si no me equivoco, el nuevo género narrativo que los americanos del Norte denominan science-fiction o scientifiction y del que son admirable ejemplo estas Crónicas. [...]”
Pero, ¿qué opina Bradbury hoy, año 2009, acerca de las maravillas tecnológicas de un porvenir que ya nos ha dado alcance? Aquí va la traducción de un fragmento de lo que expresó hace pocas semanas en un reportaje concedido a The New York Times:
“Internet es una gran distracción. Yahoo me llamó hace ocho semanas. Querían poner un libro mío ahí… ¿Sabés lo que les dije? Al diablo con ustedes. Al diablo con ustedes y con Internet. Es distracción. No tiene sentido. No es real. Está en el aire en alguna parte…”

Como ha quedado dicho, el objeto central de este blog es la cada vez mayor cercanía entre dos mundos: el del libro impreso y el de las actuales herramientas tecnológicas. Valga como aproximación inicial al encuentro de ambos mundos esta noticia, en la cual se menciona al programa de software libre para autoedición de libros Scribus:

Open Source Publishing, un estudio de diseño belga que lleva algunos años haciendo un comprometido activismo por el software libre y las tipografías libres desde su blog, acaba de ganar el premio Plantin-Moretus a la excelencia en producción y diseño de libros en la categoría no-ficción. El libro premiado se llama Cross-Over y reune ensayos acerca del cruce entre arte, cultura y tecnología, en el contexto de los nuevos medios de comunicación y la sociedad de la información. Fue diseñado sólo utilizando software libre y diagramado en Scribus, contiene visualizaciones gráficas de datos realizadas en Inkscape y mucho scripting en Python. Las tipografías usadas fueron Liberation Mono, Liberation Sans y Liberation Serif.
CROSS-over: Kunst, Media en Design in Vlaanderen ha sido editado por Liesbeth Huybrechts y publicado por BAM (Instituut voor beeldende, audiovisuele en mediakunst) / Lannoo.
El premio lleva el nombre de la imprenta holandesa fundada en el S. XVI por el célebre impresor Christoffel Plantijn y continuada por Jan Moretus. Convertida en museo desde el S. XIX, incluye las dos prensas más antiguas del mundo.

La noticia pone de manifiesto en una primera lectura -que no es la única- la posibilidad de producir libros de calidad utilizando únicamente herramientas de software libre, sin tener que pagar costosas licencias ni quedar atado a un único proveedor de software.
Por otro lado, el hecho de que un libro creado con herramientas de software libre haya obtenido un premio que, a su vez, homenajea a dos impresores de los albores de la Edad moderna, es una demostración cristalina de que la historia del libro es historia viva, y está muy lejos de cesar en su evolución.

Hace alrededor de 2300 años se dio creación, en la ciudad griega de Pergamum (en el actual territorio de Turquía), a una de las mayores y más duraderas invenciones de la tecnología humana: el códice (en latín, codex). Los códices consistían en hojas de pergamino, dobladas por el medio, generalmente originadas en piel de oveja y cuyas dos caras se utilizaban para escribir.
La extraordinaria idea de unir el centro de estas hojas plegadas en un punto de costura común -lo que a diferencia de su antecesor, el rollo de papiro, permitía una lectura sucesiva mucho más eficaz-, ha hecho que hasta nuestros días el heredero prácticamente inmutable del codex, el libro de papel, persista como uno de los símbolos más potentes de la cultura de la Humanidad.
Dos mil trescientos años más tarde, el libro tal como siempre se lo ha conocido abarrota las bibliotecas, las librerías y los hogares. Sin embargo, desde hace cierto tiempo otras nuevas y extraordinarias formas de tecnología han venido a poner en discusión, a enriquecer, a complementar, los modos de lectura seculares y, no menos, las formas de producción y circulación de los libros.
Una de esas nuevas magias tecnológicas, el software, consiguió constituirse en un tipo de escritura indispensable: las máquinas que usamos -computadoras, teléfonos, etćetera-, y que forman ya un entorno inseparable de nuestras vidas, también deben leer ciertas codificaciones para funcionar. Extensión misma de los textos humanos, los lenguajes de programación sostienen el mundo de hoy.
En el punto de encuentro de esas dos colosales formas de invención, el libro y el software, este blog se propone como un lugar donde la experiencia, el conocimiento y la opinión fundada hallen su tránsito común. Libros en papel, libros electrónicos, tecnología al servicio del libro y de la lectura serán nuestros rumbos, sin exclusión de otros senderos conexos.
