Mucho antes de que Amazon fuese siquiera imaginada por su creador, ya existía una librería -su primer local, en Nueva York, abrió en 1917- que es hoy la mayor cadena del mundo. Barnes & Noble, de ella se trata, acaba de anunciar el lanzamiento de su negocio online.
Alberto Cano describe de manera precisa las soluciones digitales de las que Barnes & Noble ha echado mano: Plastic Logic es una de ellas, y no la de menor importancia, puesto que se trata del fabricante del dispositivo lector que se utilizará. Éste será más barato y un poco más grande (con la consiguiente mejora en la facilidad de lectura) que el Kindle de Amazon.
Menor precio y más tamaño es, al parecer, la tendencia que seguirán los nuevos e-readers.
Por otra parte, Barnes & Noble hace decidido diferenciarse de su competidor utilizando el estándar abierto ePub para sus libros electrónicos y permitiendo la lectura desde distintos dispositivos (otros lectores y teléfonos inteligentes como iPhone y Blackberry), mientras que Amazon utiliza un formato cerrado que solo puede leerse desde el Kindle.
