TeleRead, una web en inglés sobre libros electrónicos, bibliotecas y edición, refiere la confusión que afectó a la blogosfera -e incluso a dicha web- cuando Amazon anunció hace poco que liberaba un paquete de código fuente para su lector Kindle DX.
La pregunta -y la confusión derivada- radicaba en a qué se refería Amazon con código fuente. Dice TeleRead que la aclaración provino de un sitio colega, Ars Technica: el código liberado, en verdad, no es el código fuente para el Kindle sino el de ciertos cambios en las porciones abiertas del dispositivo, que Amazon debe liberar con acuerdo a los términos de GPL (GNU Public License), lo cual, de hecho, viene haciendo desde 2007.
En otras palabras, el código liberado no sirve para replicar el Kindle ni tampoco para instalar firmware modificado en él.
Teleread agrega que, por un lado, es ciertamente una pena que el Kindle continúe siendo una plataforma completamente cerrada. Pero, por otro, reconoce que al menos Amazon está haciendo más fácil para la comunidad open source obtener los cambios en el código, a diferencia de la mayoría de las empresas que usan código abierto en dispositivos cerrados.

Como ha quedado dicho, el objeto central de este blog es la cada vez mayor cercanía entre dos mundos: el del libro impreso y el de las actuales herramientas tecnológicas. Valga como aproximación inicial al encuentro de ambos mundos esta noticia, en la cual se menciona al programa de software libre para autoedición de libros Scribus:

Open Source Publishing, un estudio de diseño belga que lleva algunos años haciendo un comprometido activismo por el software libre y las tipografías libres desde su blog, acaba de ganar el premio Plantin-Moretus a la excelencia en producción y diseño de libros en la categoría no-ficción. El libro premiado se llama Cross-Over y reune ensayos acerca del cruce entre arte, cultura y tecnología, en el contexto de los nuevos medios de comunicación y la sociedad de la información. Fue diseñado sólo utilizando software libre y diagramado en Scribus, contiene visualizaciones gráficas de datos realizadas en Inkscape y mucho scripting en Python. Las tipografías usadas fueron Liberation Mono, Liberation Sans y Liberation Serif.
CROSS-over: Kunst, Media en Design in Vlaanderen ha sido editado por Liesbeth Huybrechts y publicado por BAM (Instituut voor beeldende, audiovisuele en mediakunst) / Lannoo.
El premio lleva el nombre de la imprenta holandesa fundada en el S. XVI por el célebre impresor Christoffel Plantijn y continuada por Jan Moretus. Convertida en museo desde el S. XIX, incluye las dos prensas más antiguas del mundo.

La noticia pone de manifiesto en una primera lectura -que no es la única- la posibilidad de producir libros de calidad utilizando únicamente herramientas de software libre, sin tener que pagar costosas licencias ni quedar atado a un único proveedor de software.
Por otro lado, el hecho de que un libro creado con herramientas de software libre haya obtenido un premio que, a su vez, homenajea a dos impresores de los albores de la Edad moderna, es una demostración cristalina de que la historia del libro es historia viva, y está muy lejos de cesar en su evolución.

Hace alrededor de 2300 años se dio creación, en la ciudad griega de Pergamum (en el actual territorio de Turquía), a una de las mayores y más duraderas invenciones de la tecnología humana: el códice (en latín, codex). Los códices consistían en hojas de pergamino, dobladas por el medio, generalmente originadas en piel de oveja y cuyas dos caras se utilizaban para escribir.
La extraordinaria idea de unir el centro de estas hojas plegadas en un punto de costura común -lo que a diferencia de su antecesor, el rollo de papiro, permitía una lectura sucesiva mucho más eficaz-, ha hecho que hasta nuestros días el heredero prácticamente inmutable del codex, el libro de papel, persista como uno de los símbolos más potentes de la cultura de la Humanidad.
Dos mil trescientos años más tarde, el libro tal como siempre se lo ha conocido abarrota las bibliotecas, las librerías y los hogares. Sin embargo, desde hace cierto tiempo otras nuevas y extraordinarias formas de tecnología han venido a poner en discusión, a enriquecer, a complementar, los modos de lectura seculares y, no menos, las formas de producción y circulación de los libros.
Una de esas nuevas magias tecnológicas, el software, consiguió constituirse en un tipo de escritura indispensable: las máquinas que usamos -computadoras, teléfonos, etćetera-, y que forman ya un entorno inseparable de nuestras vidas, también deben leer ciertas codificaciones para funcionar. Extensión misma de los textos humanos, los lenguajes de programación sostienen el mundo de hoy.
En el punto de encuentro de esas dos colosales formas de invención, el libro y el software, este blog se propone como un lugar donde la experiencia, el conocimiento y la opinión fundada hallen su tránsito común. Libros en papel, libros electrónicos, tecnología al servicio del libro y de la lectura serán nuestros rumbos, sin exclusión de otros senderos conexos.
